story – Some disciples approached Mahavir Swami and he said, ‘Before coming to you we were discussing what causes any seeker to fall? What are the major causes and how does collapse occur? We put our own views, but there is no consensus. We have not been able to get clear answers to these questions. That is why these things have come to ask you.

Mahavir Swami listened attentively to the disciples and after thinking for some time said, ‘The main reason for the fall of any seeker is his bad luck.’ To explain this, he showed his kamandal which was completely closed. He told the disciples, ‘throw it in the water.’

The disciples threw the kamandal into the water. He did not drown in water. Then Swamiji said, ‘What will happen if you make a hole in this kamandal?’

The disciples said, “This hole will sink in the water after piercing.”

Swamiji said, ‘This is the only reason for the downfall of man. If there is a hole of badness inside a human, then gradually the human will collapse due to evils just as the kamandal sinks in the water. The four holes are very big – Kama, anger, greed and item. They should be avoided.

Learning – We should always take care that even a small fraction of evils do not come into our nature. These fortifications come into our nature in a very subtle way and pierce our life-like kamandal, after which we do something wrong that will lead to collapse, criticism, punishment. That is why one should be very cautious towards the enemies.
