  • King Yayati was married to Devayani, daughter of the demon Guru Shukracharya, can understand from the context of Yayati, how the relationship between husband and wife deteriorates

Spouses should maintain a mutual bond in married life. Minor carelessness can also increase tension in the relationship. Respect and trust must be maintained in this relationship. Things to keep in mind in a happy married life can be understood by the story of Yayati and Devayani.

The story of King Yayati is told in Srimad Bhagwat. During the Mahabharata period, King Yayati was married to Devayani, the daughter of the demon Guru Shukracharya. After marriage, Princess Sharmistha of the demons also came to Yayati with Devayani as a maid. Shukracharya had promised Yayati that he would never have a relationship with any woman other than Devayani. Yayati also pledged this to Shukracharya.

Shortly after marriage, Devayani became pregnant. When Sharmistha came to know about this, she became jealous of Devyani. Sharmistha was a princess, but was leading a maid’s life. Sharmistha lived in the hut behind the palace of King Yayati. She thought that she would get all the comforts of life by attracting King Yayati in her beautiful form. As per his plan Sharmistha attracted Yayati. Yayati had forgotten the promise given to Shukracharya and formed a relationship with Sharmistha.

After some time, Devayani came to know about this and she came to her father Shukracharya. Devyani told Shukracharya the whole thing. Hearing this, the demon Guru Shukracharya cursed Yayati that he would grow old in his youth.

Yayati grew old with this curse. Yayati then apologized to Shukracharya. The demon guru told Yayati the way to get rid of the curse, but the happiness, trust and respect from the marital life of the king was over. To maintain happiness in marital life, husband and wife should not break each other’s trust.
