There is a tradition of worshiping Goddess Sheetla Mata on the seventh and eighth days after Holi. These are called Sheetla Saptami or Sheetlashtami. In some places, they are worshiped on the first Monday or Thursday after Holi. The mention of Sheetla Mata is found in the Skanda Purana. There is a mythological belief that worshiping and fasting them does not cause other diseases and infections along with smallpox.

Sheetla Saptami and Ashtami
Dr. Ganesh Mishra, Jyotishacharya of the Central Sanskrit University, states that at some places in the country, Sheetla Mata is worshiped on the seventh day of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month and at Ashtami in some places. This time, these dates will be on 3rd and 4th April. The Lord of Saptami Tithi is the Sun and Rudra, the god of Ashtami. Both of them can be worshiped on these two dates due to being the fiery god. According to the decision Sindhu Granth, Sunrise Vyapini Tithi is taken in this fast. Therefore, worship and fasting on Saptami should be done on 3 April. Similarly, Sheetalashtami should be celebrated on 4 April.

Cold food is done only during this fast
The only fast of Mother Sheetla is such that in which cold food is eaten. On this fast, it is a tradition to have food prepared a day before. Therefore, this fast is also called Basoda or Basiyaura. It is believed that a change in food is made on the change of seasons. That is why the tradition of cold food has been created. According to religious texts, worship of Sheetla Mata and eating cold food during this fast does not cause infection and other diseases.
