According to Pt. Manish Sharma, Jyotishacharya of Ujjain, the story related to the marriage of Tulsi and Shaligram is told in the Brahmavaivartpurana. According to the legend, Tulsi was the wife of a demon named Shankhchud in olden times. Shankhchud was impious. The gods and humans were all plagued by this demon. Due to the virtue of Tulsi, not all the gods were able to kill Shankhchud.

Then all the gods reached Lord Vishnu and Shiva. At that time, Lord Vishnu took the form of Shankhachud and dissolved the essence of Tulsi. Due to which the power of Shankhchud was exhausted and Shivji killed him.

Later, when Tulsi came to know about this, he cursed Lord Vishnu to become a stone. Vishnu accepted the curse of Tulsi and said that you will live on earth as a plant and river and you will also be worshiped. My devotees will get merit benefits by getting you and me married. Tulsi is still on earth today as Gandaki and plant of Nepal. Shaligrams are found in the Gandaki River itself.
