story – One day Guru Nanak Dev was passing through a forest with his disciples. He had a bowl of bronze. From this bowl they used to drink water, eat food. All the disciples knew that this bowl is very dear to Guru Nanak.

When Guru Nanak saw a pit of mud in the forest, he suddenly threw the bowl in that pit. All the disciples were surprised to see this.

Gurunanak said to everyone, “Go, get my bowl out of the mud.”

The mud was very dirty. All the disciples started thinking how to get the bowl out of the mud? Don’t know how deep it is? If you go inside, the clothes will get spoiled.

After such thinking, all the disciples made different excuses that they would not be able to get the bowl out.

Gurunanak was silent and listening to everyone’s talk, but Lahna, Gurunanak’s beloved disciple, did not care about the clothes getting dirty and he got down in the mud. He took the bowl out of the mud and washed it with clean water and gave it to Gurunanak.

Later this disciple Lahna became known as Guru Angad.

Learning – Why did Guru Nanak throw that bowl in the mud? Actually, they wanted to test the relationship between the Guru and the disciples. The lesson of this story is that what we believe to be a guru, we should obey everything. Parents, saints or any other person, guru can be anyone. There should be a trusting relationship with the Guru. This trust strengthens the relationship between the guru and the disciple.
