According to the Puranas, when the demon king Hiranyakashyap saw that his son Prahlada did not worship anyone other than Lord Vishnu, nor considered him a god. So he got angry and despite many efforts when Prahlada did not get out of his way of devotion, Hiranyakashyap ordered his sister Holika to take Prahlad in his lap and sit in the fire.
The reason behind this was that Holika had such a gift in her boon that the fire could not harm her. But the exact opposite happened – Holika sitting in the fire with Prahlad on her lap was consumed by the fire and nothing happened to the devotee Prahlada.
