Garh Mukteshwar is located 42 km from Meerut and is situated on the right bank of the Ganges River.

An important story is told about this place in Shiv Purana. According to this legend, at this place, the wretched Shivagans were liberated from the vampire vagina, hence the name of this shrine became ‘Garh Mukteshwar’ meaning God who freed them. According to the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata, it was part of the Kuru capital Hastinapur in the Treta era.

Mukteshwar Shiva’s ancient Shivling and temple Karkandeshwar is here. According to Shiv Puran, the ancient name of this place is also the beloved of Shiva Vallabh i.e. Shiva.
