The belief behind this festival celebrated every year on the new moon day of Kartik month is that on this day, Lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya by killing Ravana and completing his exile and in the same joy the entire Ayodhya was illuminated with lamps. Since then the tradition of celebrating Diwali started. Diwali begins with Deepdan and Dhanteras and this festival continues till the day of Bhaiya Dooj after Govardhan Puja.
