On Sunday, 7 February, it is the Ekadashi of the month of Maghanpaksha of Magh. It is called Shattila Ekadashi. On this day auspicious work related to mole is done. According to Pt. Manish Sharma, Jyotishacharya of Ujjain, sesame seeds are planted today. It is a tradition to bathe with sesame water. Havan is done with sesame seeds. People in need and in the temple donate sesame seeds.
In the Vaishnava section of Skanda Purana there is a chapter named Ekadashi Mahatmya. In this chapter, the importance of all the monasteries of the year is explained. Sri Krishna told Yudhishthira about all the Ekadashis.
On Sunday, Ekadashi, along with Lord Vishnu, should also worship Suryadev on this day. Offer water to Lord Surya after bathing on Ekadashi. At the time of offering water, chant the mantra: Om Surya Nam. Mantra should be chanted at least 108 times.
After Surya Puja, do the consecration of Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Vishnu in the home temple or any other big temple. In the puja, fill the saffron mixed milk in the conch to the south and offer it to the Lord. Offer clothes, necklaces and flowers. Serve sweets with basil leaves. Offer a banana. Aarti is lit with incense and lamps. Chant the chants of ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ 108 times. Keep in mind that basil leaves should not be broken on Sunday. Pick the broken leaves near the basil and wash them and use them in worship. Old leaves of basil can also be used.
Those who fast for Lord Vishnu on this date should not eat food on this day. A time can be fruitful. Offer food to a needy person and donate money.
After sunset on this day, light a lamp near Tulsi and do a circumambulation. Keep in mind that basil should not be touched in the evening.
On Ekadashi, milk should be offered to the Shivling with a silver vessel. Offer saffron mixed water with a copper pot on the Shivling. Offer the leaflets and figure flowers on the Shivling. High Nam: Chant Shivaaya Mantra. After sunset, near the Shivling, light a lamp of ghee in Hanumanji’s temple. Recite Hanuman Chalisa.
